Ever put something in the rubbish only to find out later when you get home that the binmen haven’t taken it? This is a common occurrence for lots of our customers. The binmen are told what they can and cannot collect, especially on recycling-only days.

Ever stuffed a hover in the recycling bin? Surrey Council will not dispose of items; only waste that is correctly bagged and in the correct bin will be disposed of. This is the way to dispose of lots of items you are not supposed to, but we didn’t tell you that.

Items that the binmen won’t take EVER

Car tyres. Car tyres are difficult to recycle, so they must be disposed of in a landfill. Surrey Council charges £5 per tyre for disposal; see here. Bicycle tyres are free.

Rubble: If you add rubble to your brown recycling bin, they will not take it. Rubble, such as car tyres, goes into landfill. As it is heavy, there are additional charges. Currently, most councils are charging between £2 and £ 3 for a bin-liner-sized bag of builders’ rubble.

Small electrical Items: Ever seen these left outside people’s houses? That is because bin men won’t take away Air Con Units , Air Fryers and Coffee Machines. In fact, anything with a plug

Furniture: Unless it is wood and you can break it up yourself and put it in the garden waste bin then this will need collection. We change by the cubic yard. 1 cubic yard is the size of two washing machines (note not the weight!) So if you have a big wardrobe which the binmen won’t take, then you would be best advised to break it down into panels, which would save you 50%. Don’t put laminated wood into any recycling bin.

Diswashers and Cookers: If you didn’t pay the shop where you bought it from to take away the old one then you need to give us a call. Not only are the backs of these appliances dirty, they often weigh a ton. You would not want an old oven in your car. Also, the council won’t accept them, and we charge a small premium because they are difficult to handle.

Batteries: Car-sized batteries are hazardous to recycle or dispose of, as they contain hazardous lead and acid. Do not discard them in your bins; if the binmen see them, they will return them to you. The same is in a skip, though you could hide it more effectively. We take car batteries and aim to recycle 95% of the lead from them. There is an extra charge for all batteries as with all rubbish clearance companies.

Fridges: Fridges have gas coils at the back. The gas cannot be expelled as it affects the ozone. This is why your local dump may refuse to take your fridge and why  we charge more for fridges.

Super Bulky or toxic items: No council service, either your regular bin men or the council’s bulk item service will take the following. Asbestos, Fluorescent tubes (including one in a sun bed), some Garden waste over 6ft, Oil tanks, paint pots, sheets of glass or plastic, heavy items of furniture, pianos etc.
